The present study aimed to investigate the relationship between mental health, physical activity, and sleep quality among university students. A total of 1,200 university students from three universities in China participated in this cross-sectional survey. Participants completed self-report questionnaires assessing their mental health, physical activity levels, and sleep quality.
The results showed that nearly 40% of the participants reported experiencing moderate to severe symptoms of depression, and over 30% reported experiencing moderate to severe symptoms of anxiety. Additionally, the majority of participants (60%) did not meet the recommended guidelines for physical activity. Regarding sleep quality, more than half of the participants (55%) reported poor sleep quality.
The findings also revealed significant associations between mental health, physical activity, and sleep quality. Students who engaged in higher levels of physical activity reported better mental health and sleep quality compared to their less active counterparts. Conversely, those with poorer sleep quality were more likely to experience symptoms of depression and anxiety.
These findings highlight the importance of promoting comprehensive well-being among university students. University administrators and healthcare providers should consider implementing strategies to encourage regular physical activity and improve sleep quality, as these factors appear to be closely linked to students' mental health. Interventions targeting these areas may help to alleviate the mental health challenges faced by many university students.
Future research should explore the underlying mechanisms that contribute to the relationship between mental health, physical activity, and sleep quality in this population. Additionally, longitudinal studies are needed to investigate the directionality of these associations and the long-term implications for student well-being and academic performance.
In conclusion, the present study provides valuable insights into the interconnected nature of mental health, physical activity, and sleep quality among university students. These findings underscore the need for comprehensive, multifaceted approaches to supporting the holistic well-being of this vulnerable population.
